Teachers College Office of School and Community Partnerships

The Harlem Ivy project is a groundbreaking partnership between Teachers College and five well established, not-for-profit organizations—The After-School Corporation (TASC), Children’s Art and Science Workshops, Harlem Children’s Zone, Harlem Dowling-West Side Center, and the New York City Mission Society—all of which have strong ties to Harlem and the surrounding communities. Teachers College and these organizations will work together to provide quality after-school programming at four schools in Central Harlem, Morningside Heights, Washington Heights and Inwood.  The Harlem Ivy project marks the beginning of a new era of Teachers College, local schools, and community based organizations working together to inspire New York City’s children.

The Harlem Ivy project has three major objectives.  The first objective is to increase student exposure to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through hands-on inquiry based activities.  The second objective is to bring service learning into after-school programming allowing students to engage in giving back to their school and/or community through learning processes.  The third objective is to increase student familiarity with higher education.  This occurs via the participation of Teachers College students in the after-school programs, elementary student visits to the Teachers College and Columbia campuses, and connections that are made between learning done during program hours and college study and enrollment.

Harlem Ivy is one of several new ventures by Teachers College to support New York City public schools and their students. It is sponsored by the Office of School and Community Partnerships at Teachers College, which was created in 2007 with a mission to engage the College more closely with public schools in New York City. Harlem Ivy is currently housed in four elementary schools serving a population of roughly 400 students.
